Prof. Dr. Boles studied biological and chemical sciences at the University of Cologne, and received his Ph.D. in microbiology at the Technical University of Darmstadt. For his habilitation in molecular microbiology he went to University of Duesseldorf. Since 2002 he is a professor for microbiology and genetics at the Goethe University Frankfurt. Prof. Boles’ main research interests are in applied sciences in the field of yeast biotechnology.

Prof. Boles is co-founder of the start-up company Butalco GmbH (www.butalco.com). His former Ph.D student Marco Keller founded the start-up company Sweet Waste Solutions”. Moreover, Prof. Boles has been acting as a scientific adviser for various companies.
